An easy and delicious homemade Simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting recipe! Use it on your favorite cakes, cupcakes or just a spoon – I won’t judge!
With a blog name like Love Bakes Good Cakes, you could safely assume that I like to bake (and eat) cakes. I actually love to bake! As much as I love to bake, sometimes, I have even been known to take a shortcut and use a boxed cake mix. Yes, I cheat. Sometimes. I actually like keeping a few boxes of cake mixes on hand for a quick treat for the kiddos or when we have unexpected guests. However, I am very particular when it comes to frosting. I do not like the stuff in a can. I grew up eating it but somewhere in my young adult life, I realized I could make it myself and not only was it easy, but it tasted a billion times better than the canned frosting. My husband and kiddos don’t mind the canned stuff, but it ain’t happening for me! Ever since I found out how easy it was to make my own frosting, there is no going back!
My go to frosting is a Simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. When I say simple, I mean you put it all in the bowl and mix it and it’s done. Bam. No need for that canned stuff. Seriously, this homemade Simple Vanilla Buttercream will make a believer out of you! Making frosting from scratch is so easy! You can easily use food coloring to make it any color you like. I love to pair this frosting with a chocolate cake or cupcake. A few sprinkles takes this to an “oooh and ahhhh” worthy dessert! I could never get the canned frosting to pipe onto cupcakes right – but I never have that problem when I make this Simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting! I love making those pretty swirls! Enjoy!
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) real butter, softened
- 3-3/4 cups powdered sugar
- 3-4 tbsp. milk or water
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- Food coloring, if desired
- Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, using 3 tbsp. milk or water.
- With an electric mixer, beat the ingredients on medium speed until well combined and fluffy. Only add the additional tablespoon of milk or water if frosting seems too thick.
- Use to frost cakes or cupcakes of your choice.
