Should You Live Stream A Birth?

This is a question I have been asking myself for a couple of weeks now as I come the end of my second pregnancy.

We have decided on a home birth which is controversial at best in the United States. It has started to become a little less stigmatized, but is still looked at as a “hippie” thing to do and midwives are treated as second class providers.

We had our daughter at a birthing center and everything went relatively well considering I was a first time mom and we didn’t know for sure how I would birth a baby. I also had the complication of having GDM (Gestational Diabetes). This made things more complicated and I found out later that the birthing center I chose were considering risking me out due to it.  Thankfully, I had two midwifes on my side that fought for me to continue at the birthing center.  My daughter was born on 9/3/2014 after laboring for about 21 hours and pushing for approximately 40 minutes.

Fast forward a couple years and I am a little over a week away from my due date with my son. I am so ready to meet him it is almost unbearable. This pregnancy I have GDM again and it has also been diet and exercise controlled but has been much more challenging this time around. I have been cleared by a maternal fetal medicine doctor for any issues and have been given a clean bill of health. So I have been covered on all my bases, even though he couldn’t “recommend” a home birth medically because they just won’t do that in the medical community.

I strongly believe that everything is going to turn out just fine and go smoothly as it did with my daughter. It is for that reason that I was considering the idea of live streaming my labor/birth. I feel like it’s such a natural thing and have been obsessed with watching other people’s births online since I was a teen. I think it would be so eye opening for some, and others may think it is a horrible idea.

I am not sure if I am brave enough to put that all out there, however. I do plan on recording the birth and will probably upload an edited version online. But I’m still not sure that is going to have the same effect as doing it live.

I was doing some research and came across an Australian Mom blogger who has a large following is planning to live stream her labor (at least) on Facebook to her 30,000+ followers in July. Check out this article about her HERE!

I have found a couple of other moms who have live streamed a birth, but it is very limited to what I could find publicly. I probably won’t have the courage/bravery to do the same, but I think it would be pretty awesome to see.

What are your thoughts on live-streaming a birth?
