This giveaway is a partnership with Nakturnal, with a prize of a gift certificate. But our opinions are our own.
We have partnered up with Nakturnal for a Diapers.com giveaway! Today we are talking picky eaters how to get creative with littles that have particular palates.. All the products we love most are available at Diapers.com.
Picky Eaters. We ALL have them to some degree am I right or am I right? I’m sure blessed to have a couple kiddos that will try just about anything. Pickled beets, salsa, salmon, elk sausage…you name it, they will at least give it a go.
There is my one kiddo that could have his picture by the word “Picky” in the dictionary! I was always selective when it came to my cuisine growing up. Foods could not touch each other (weird I know), I stuck with ONLY foods I KNEW I liked, etc. Compared to my younger self he is slightly more selective. He has literally gagged on green beans in the past…so needless to say we don’t push the envelope with him very often.
So how to we get around a particular palate?!
I try not to focus on WHAT I want him to try but more on HOW I can get him to at least give it a try…basically I try and trick him. 😉
But how you ask?! Below are some approaches that have served me well.
Try a bar or pouch.
This is a pretty common approach for parents today. We have the modern convinces that previous generations did not. My little doesn’t care what’s in there as long as the packaging is pouch or some type of bar he will give it a try. We love brands like Plum, Ella’s Kitchen and even local places like Sweet Simplicity Baby Foods.
Been there and tried that for your kiddos?
OK next up is mincing things to microscopic portions.
Annoying at times but very effective. I can empathize with my guy on this because I’m all about texture myself. Hand me a whole tomato or onion?! NOPE! Add them into a meal finely minced and we are in business. Tip: Sneak meat or veggies in mac n’ cheese and you might just pull one past them.
Take it a step further.
Try a healthy substitution…there are TONS out there.
Get creative with the things they like. Substitute ingredients with a meal you know they love. Tip: Try cauliflower noodles instead of spaghetti OR sweet potatoes fries instead of Russet potato fries. You can find TONS of ideas on Pinterest.
You thought that was all?! I’ve got more suggestions.
Present new foods in fun ways.
Tip: Mix things up with cookie cutters or place them in cupcake wrappers for your little eaters. I do “funny face” meals, mostly during the our summertime, that my family gets CRAZY excited about.
And one last option similar to the last…
Try packaging it all up nicely.
We use the Rubbermaid Blox. And let me TELL YOU…they love it. My husband put together snacks one day for school and didn’t use their Blox and the teacher told me at pick up that it DID NOT go unnoticed. Hehe! I even take it a step further and add a little washi tape to the boxes to let the kids know which box is for lunch or snack. My little dude enjoys that I QUICKLY found out that day!
