Before there was blogging, there was theatre. Yep, I’m a big theatre nerd- even have the degree to prove it! My responsibilities as “Mom” have kept me in and out of the theatre over the past 7 years, but I always come back to my first love. When we decided to move to Surprise in 2012, one of my first actions was to search for local theatre, and I found it!
Ghostlight Theatre has been in the area for the past five years, but it was about a year ago that they found their very own space, in the Sundrome Plaza in Sun City West. Their 2013-2014 season was performed in their new location, and I finally joined their ranks when I performed in “Little Nell” and also ended up on their Board of Directors!
This season I was asked to direct the show “Over The River and Through the Woods.” It’s a sweet story about Nick, a young man who has been offered a promotion at work, which will move him across the country and away from his two sets of grandparents, whom he has seen every week for his whole life.
Naturally his grandparents don’t want him to move, so they concoct a plan to get him to stay. A plan that involves a very pretty, very single, young lady- the niece of Grandma Emma’s canasta partner!
The banter is hilarious, as is the clash of the generations, as Nick and his grandparents try to understand one another. But behind their schemes to get Nick to stay, the grandparents have strong emotions and real reasons for wanting him to stick around. After all, “what matters is family.”
I am personally thrilled that we have Ghostlight, and other theatre groups, here in the west valley. In addition to their mainstage season, Ghostlight offers additional programs such as youth theatre productions and a summer playwriting camp for kids. And what a great place to go on date night!
Over The River opens Thursday, March 5th and runs through Sunday, March 22nd. Performances are at 7pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The next show on the schedule (which I will be performing in!) is Lost In Yonkers, which opens at the end of April. You can purchase tickets on the Ghostlight Theatre website.
Hope to see you there!
