I am always on the lookout for healthy ways to manage the natural discomforts we sometimes face as human beings. A huge part of my personal self-care is to ensure I am taking care of myself in the most natural and effective way I can find. Often the answer I am looking for is an essential oil. The reason is simple – they are easy, accessible and they work! From back pain to indigestion, from headaches to stuffy noses, and from bad moods to a minor cut, essential oils have always saved the day in my house.

Below are a few of my favorites that I encourage you to experiment with if you haven’t tried before. I often use in my home as well as in Reiki sessions and clients have seen great benefits. Of course, I am not a doctor so please seek medical advice if necessary. Also, it is important to know that these only have therapeutic benefits and are safe to take internally if you get a great quality, non-fragrance based oil. (I primarily use doTERRA®)

1. Lavender

Probably one of the more common oils, this is a great one to have on hand at all times. Usually know for its calming properties it can be used diffused in the air, in a warm bath or dabbed on the temples to give you instant relaxation. It has helped me more than once calm my nerves before a big presentation.  Did you know that it is also fantastic for the skin? Lavender can really help sooth minor burns, eczema, bug bites and even diaper rash.

2. Lemon

One of my favorite “all around oils” lemon can be used to sooth a sore throat when a drop is added to some honey as well as lift your mood when diffused in the air. It is also a great one added to some water or vinegar to use as a cleaning solution. If you love lemon water you can add a drop of this to a glass of water and it will help cleanse your system as well as taste great!

3. Peppermint

I love to add a drop of peppermint to my water for a great mouth rinse and to settle the stomach but did you also know that a drop put on the back of neck or forehead can help with a headache? It has even been known to help with memory and is a good emotional balancer when diffused.

4. Frankincense

Not as well known but this oil is incredible! It can help clean minor cuts and bites. It also is another great one for calming headaches. Great for the skin it can be used on the face to give a natural, radiant look (has been known to help with aging). The immune support is incredible when you put it on the bottom of your feet.    

5. Ginger

When I was pregnant I didn’t get a ton of morning sickness but any slight queasiness was easily calmed with a slight sniff of this great oil! This trick also works if you have a stomach bug or the flu. I also just love the uplifting smell of this one when used with frankincense and lemon diffused in the air.

All the above can be used directly on the skin but if you have sensitive skin it is best to dilute Peppermint & Ginger. If using on any children do some research first for the proper dilution. I would love to hear if you give them a try and which ones are your favorites!
